The Declaration of Independence uses some big words, one of them being “Unalienable.” We will discuss the idea of natural rights in class this coming week and throughout the next few months, but it is this very idea that inspired our founders to make sure that the rights of citizens would be protected….of course, as we will learn, we are still working on extending those rights to all citizens.

Even though John Locke wrote that natural rights included “Life, Liberty, and Property,” the writers of our declaration of independence left out the word Property, saying that all men deserved “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Why do you think they did this?

I think that they changed it to the pursuit of happiness because not every person would have land back then. Even if they didnt have land they deserved to be happy with their lives and everyone wanted people to be happy no matter what!
i think that they changed it because if they said, life, liberty, and property, little kids would get the idae that they could run their own houses and might ru- no- BURN it down to the ground. or something likE THAT, WELL YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
I think they changed it because back then, not everyone had the right for property, but everyone deserves the right to be happy with their families or just by themselves, if they want. Nobody can tell you to be or not to be happy
I think the writers of the declaration of independence changed it to pursuit of happiness because not everyone could afford to have property. They needed some way to be happy.
i think that they changed it because even if some people cant afford what everyone else can, they should still be happy. (:
I think they changed it to pursuit of happiness because not everyone owns land, but everyone has the right to be happy.
I think they changed it to “pursuit of happiness” because property is something you buy but your rights to happiness is something you are born with. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are all things that you don’t buy, but are born with so property doesn’t really fit in with someones natural rights.
i think they changed it to pursuit of happiness because, not everyone was able to afford land, and they wanted everyone to be happy campers
haha i liked brittnies commet. and i agree with her because not everyone was wealthy. very few could aford land.
