As we discussed in class, the American Colonists had basically been left to govern themselves for much of their early history from the mid 1500′s through the 1600′s. During this time they prospered greatly and many of them experienced a level of freedom and wealth that they couldn’t have found had they lived in England. After the French and Indian War, England had to pay back its war debts. They raised taxes in England, and also started to raise taxes in the Colonies. After all, they had fought to protect the Colonists. So….The Colonists want their freedom and the British want the Colonists to help pay for that freedom.
The Question: After reading part of Chapter 6, who do you think is right? Why?
I think that the colonists are right because they have no reason to be taxed. They dont have any member of the colonies in parliament so the parliament in England is making the rules for the colonies. If i were in the colonies i would be outraged.
Even though it is quiet biased I agree with the colonists because of thier audacity and determination. The colonist stood up for what them and I agree is right and that is a noble task in itself. In the britishes defence though they did think that the colonies should pay up but didn’t take into consideration that they might want to speak their peice and may of mad a decent point.
i think that the colonist were right, they shouldn’t of just had taxes all of a sudden on mostly everything. even though they pretty much governed themselfs they didn’t take advantage of the fact that they had say in there government kinda. they didn’t really do anything to deserve that.
Even though the British helped out the colonists alot so that they won the French and Indian War, they didn’t have any reason to place so many taxes on the colonists. They can’t tax sugar, stamps, and all of the many other taxes that they put on the colonies. So that would say that I think the colonists were right. Government shouldnt be able to take over colonists money and rights.
I think the colonists are right because they dont live in England and they dont have the right to tax goods that people need ever day. They colonist left England so they could govern themselves
Colonist, because freedom is suppose to be free and that is why they came over here from England. The reason why I don’t think they should pay a tax is because they did not particapte in the war.
I agree with Daniell, and i do not think the colonist should be taxed because they were not being representid in England, so they had no voice. So they had no chioce. If you know what i am saying.
Personally i agree with the colonists are they have no right to be taxed. There was no member of parliament. There making all oh the choices how to tax and it is not fair.
the colonists because the should not be taxed on stuff they really didn’t do so its really not fair.
