haitian devastation

Why is the devastation especially bad in Haiti as opposed to a similar sized earthquake that hit California in 2003 (San Simeon)  but only caused 2 deaths and 40 injuries? (By the way the 2 deaths came from people who were in “unreinforced concrete buildings”)?  Let me know what you think in comments below.

Amendment Expert Assignment http://www.mrsimonsen.com/2009/12/07/amendment-expert-assignment/ http://www.mrsimonsen.com/2009/12/07/amendment-expert-assignment/#comments Mon, 07 Dec 2009 13:55:07 +0000 Mr. S http://www.mrsimonsen.com/?p=345 Good morning kids……

Today starts a 2 day project in which you will need to be sharp and focussed.  By the end of the hour tomorrow, each of you should have created a nice piece for our class presentation on the 27 amendments to our Constitution.  With any luck, each of the 4 history classes should have a picture illustrated podcast of all 27 amendments.  I will have each of you draw a number (1-27) from a basket to find out which amendment you will be reporting on.  Click the link below, read the directions & quietly get started:

Returning to Freedom? http://www.mrsimonsen.com/2009/10/05/returning-to-freedom/ http://www.mrsimonsen.com/2009/10/05/returning-to-freedom/#comments Mon, 05 Oct 2009 23:51:39 +0000 Mr. S http://www.mrsimonsen.com/?p=218 As we discussed in class, the American Colonists had basically been left to govern themselves for much of their early history from the mid 1500’s through the 1600’s.  During this time they prospered greatly and many of them experienced a level of freedom and wealth that they couldn’t have found had they lived in England.  After the French and Indian War, England had to pay back its war debts.  They raised taxes in England, and also started to raise taxes in the Colonies.  After all, they had fought to protect the Colonists.  So….The Colonists want their freedom and the British want the Colonists to help pay for that freedom.

The Question:  After reading part of Chapter 6, who do you think is right?  Why?

Please keep in mind that although I won’t fill your phone with a bunch of messages (2 per week maybe), that standard text rates apply.  So if you don’t have a texting plan, it would be best if you didn’t sign up.  The beauty of the whole thing is, you can “unsubscribe” at any time.  If you subscribe and then decide you don’t like it….just hit the “unsubscribe” link in the SMS sign-up box and you can get out of it.  You can also send me an email and let me know to clear you from my registry.

Your name and phone number will not be shared with anyone……..give it a try!

Un-alien-able rights?? What are those? http://www.mrsimonsen.com/2009/09/13/un-alien-able-rights-what-are-those/ http://www.mrsimonsen.com/2009/09/13/un-alien-able-rights-what-are-those/#comments Sun, 13 Sep 2009 11:39:26 +0000 Mr. S http://www.mrsimonsen.com/?p=171 The Declaration of Independence uses some big words, one of them being “Unalienable.”  We will discuss the idea of natural rights in class this coming week and throughout the next few months, but it is this very idea that inspired our founders to make sure that the rights of citizens would be protected….of course, as we will learn, we are still working on extending those rights to all citizens.

Extra Credit: (Make a relevant comment to the question below for 1 point extra credit.  Comment on someone else’s comment to create a class discussion and recieve more points – You need to be registered to get credit)

Even though John Locke wrote that natural rights included “Life, Liberty, and Property,”  the writers of our declaration of independence left out the word Property, saying that all men deserved “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Why do you think they did this?

Who Needs Government Anyway? Well….Umm…. http://www.mrsimonsen.com/2009/09/12/who-needs-government-anyway-well-umm/ http://www.mrsimonsen.com/2009/09/12/who-needs-government-anyway-well-umm/#comments Sun, 13 Sep 2009 02:42:02 +0000 Mr. S http://www.mrsimonsen.com/?p=167 This week in class we’ll be discussing where the ideas behind our government came from.  Before the United States was the United States the people living in the Colonies had certain ideas about how they felt they should be treated.  These ideas were influenced by many things within their culture.  The fact that many of them were literate and of European descent meant that they had access to the writings of the “Natural Rights Philosophers.”  People like John Locke and Thomas Hobbes had all written on the purpose of government and what good government should look like.  I posted this picture to illustrate what stores in our town might look like in a state of nature.

Extra Credit Question: (at this point, there are no wrong answers, but make sure you make a serious attempt to answer the question, otherwise I will award you no points.  You also need to be registered)

Based on what we’ve learned in class, do you think government is necessary?  Why or Why not?
